A Brief Synopsis About Monroe Connecticut
The small city of Monroe Connecticut is located in the middle of Connecticut’s famed Connecticut River Valley. The city was incorporated in 18 23. During its incorporation, Monroe had been a farming community but eventually, it became a more suburbanized community that maintains itself up through successive economic development. Monroe is Connecticut’s third largest city and is the seat of government for the cities of Monroe, Greenwich, Fairfield, New Haven, and Suffield. In fact, it is considered to be the capital of Connecticut. There are many interesting facts about this city and some of these facts include:
The earliest history of the Monroe Connecticut townsites can be traced back to the seventeenth century. It is said that a man by the name of John Weld came from New Haven and settled in the hamlet of Hill. There is a hamlet called Greenwich that stands on the border between Hill and Monmouth counties. Greenwich was created when a young boy drowned his mother and his family in a well on the premises of their new home.
The earliest town in Monroe Connecticut that was recorded on a town book was a fishing village called Greenwich. The first white house was built in that same hamlet in 1734. The year after, another white house was built in that same hamlet. On the year of 1745, a judge had to commute the sentence of a man who was convicted of manslaughter because of the colonial era laws that kept blacks from holding high office. The commute took four years and the case was carried into the courts of the county of New Haven.
The first textile mills to be built in the Monroe Connecticut area were built by the Swedish immigrants who migrated to the state in the 1700’s. Many of the early settlers in the area of Monroe, CT were also from the Swedish region of Minnesota. A connection between these two locations can be found in the town of Fairfieldtown, which is located on the south shore of the Connecticut River. Fairfieldtown was originally a connected community with the towns of New London and Greenwich.
When Connecticut became a state, it had one more county than every other state did at first. Connecticut became a compact state when it formed the first political subdivision, known as the county of Connecticut. The most populous city in the state at this time was New Haven. New Haven has a long history of being a port city for shipping. As a result, the city of Fairfield, which is in the southern part of the county of Connecticut, is named for an early boat harbor.
At this point, the population of the county of Monroe was about thirty-two thousand. This includes the two thousand plus people who are considered residents in the town of Monroe and its suburbs. Monroe Connecticut is one of the most densely populated cities in the state of Connecticut. In the 2021 census, Monroe was one of the twenty-three towns that have a population of more than one hundred thousand.
The town of Monroe Connecticut is the seat of the state of Connecticut. The county court of this county is responsible for hearing and deciding cases that have to do with civil law. A person who owns a property or a business in this county is required to have a license to do so. A person without a license is restricted from doing business in Monroe Connecticut. These laws are imposed because of the nature of the business that is going on and the risks involved.
The counties of Berwick, Hampton, Monmouth, New London, Oxford, and West Hartford are all located on the eastern border of the state of Connecticut. The cities of New London, Fairfield, Monroe, and the cities of Bristol, West Hartford, and Greenwich are all located on the southern border. All of these cities border the Long Island Sound. All of these areas have the typical aspects of a middle class suburban community such as easy access to stores, schools, transportation, and entertainment, while still being close enough to be close to the important port of New London.
